Teaching is my passion

At just 27 years old, Agostinho is already shaping the future of Timor-Leste—one lesson at a time.

A teacher, husband and father, Agostinho lives in Dili with his wife and two children and is deeply committed to his vocation.

His journey began in 2016 where he was first introduced to Instituto São João de Brito (ISJB), studying Portuguese there he had quickly discovered his true passion: teaching.

After graduating, he spent three years in a remote village teaching nine classes a week, where he was very committed to seeing the growth of his students.

“Teaching is not just about giving lessons in a classroom. It also involves activities outside of class—having lunch with students, laughing together, and engaging in extracurricular activities,” he says.

In 2022, Agostinho returned to ISJB as a teacher. Today, he coordinates student affairs and teaches “Ignatian Accompaniment” to all year levels.

His approach is shaped by his Jesuit education, specifically the Ignatian Pedagogy, which he says has helped him become more compassionate, reflective, and confident.

“All I want now is to dedicate myself to teaching, to work without boasting but with joy, passion, and humility, to help make the world a better place,” he says.

At ISJB Agostinho believes he can make the most impact on the future of Timor-Leste, “Teaching is my passion. ISJB formed me, and now I want to give back.”
