Standing with Survivors: Earthquake devastates Myanmar and Thailand

We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to all those affected by the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand on 28 March.
In Myanmar the earthquake has claimed the lives of at least 1,700 people and injured more than 3,400 others. As rescue efforts continue and more information emerges, the true scale of this devastating tragedy is expected to become clearer in the hours and days ahead.
“The devastating earthquake is the latest in a relentless series of tragedies—COVID, coup, economic collapse, conscription laws, floods, and now this. The suffering is unimaginable, with countless displaced internally and as refugees. Myanmar has never been more vulnerable," said a Jesuit on the ground.
“Yet, amid the darkness, your love shines through. Your messages, prayers, and support—via calls, emails, and social media—have been a lifeline. Thank you...The scenes are heartbreaking: no electricity, scarce water, overcrowded shelters.
“But hope remains. With your continued solidarity—through prayers, awareness, and aid—we can bring light to these shadows. Keep Myanmar in your hearts.
Here in the community there is currently no electricity, and access to clean water is limited, however, our Jesuit partners on the ground are safe and assessing the situation.
We stand in solidarity with the communities affected by this tragedy and remain ready to respond with our Emergency Action Fund should our local Jesuit partners need.
“Our Sacred Heart Cathedral in Taungoo (Myanmar) is in bad shape. Debris has fallen everywhere, and religious statues toppled to the ground as the earthquake shook the city,”
