As the world marks Human Rights Day on 10 December, we’re reminded that every young person deserves the right to learn, to feel safe, and to grow into their full potential.
For Kim, a quiet 19-year-old from Battambang, Cambodia, this right once felt far beyond her reach.
In 2023, when Kim arrived at the student centre run by our partner Karuna Battambang Organisation, she was a shy Grade 10 student facing more hardship than many her age.
A tough childhood
Kim’s parents separated when she was just nine months old, and her mother left for Thailand for work when she was two.
Raised by her grandparents in a small, simple home, she grew up without the presence or affection of either parent. She remembers meeting her father only once, at age four. “My childhood was not a happy one,” she says quietly.
Before joining the centre, school was a struggle. Her family could not afford private classes, causing her to fall behind and skip lessons. She spent most of her time at home, avoiding social interactions and doubting her abilities.
“I had many difficulties in study… I didn’t like socialising with friends,” she recalls.

“I get the opportunity to learn many things. Not only school lessons but cooking, relationships and how to live in a community.”

Everything began to change when she entered the student centre. For the first time, she had access not only to academic support but also to life skills, friendship and a caring community.
“I get the opportunity to learn many things,” she explains. “Not only school lessons but cooking, relationships and how to live in a community.”
Gradually, Kim grew from a withdrawn girl into someone more open, active and hopeful.
Dreams for a bright future
Today, she dreams of studying bakery, starting a small business and supporting her family. She also hopes to help others facing poverty, just as she once did.
As Human Rights Day approaches, Kim’s journey shows how powerful it is when a young person is given the simple, fundamental right to learn — a right that can open the door to a brighter future.
